The Natural Beauty of Marble
Marble is considered a soft stone and its beauty makes it a popular choice for architectural use and tiling. Cut and polished, marble gives any surface area a sophisticated look. For this reason, it was extensively used in the building of the famous Taj Mahal in India.
Marble tiles are often used on floors and walls of foyers, kitchen and bathroom areas, as well as in pool areas. However, due to the fact that it is a porous material which makes it very absorbent, it’s susceptible to easy staining if not properly coated.
Marble tiles are usually more expensive than most other tiling options available because they are 100% natural and are considered a limited resource.
Different Marble Options
Marble comes in a variety of options and understanding each will help you choose what is the best for your purposes. The three best marble flooring options are Calcite, Dolomite and Magnesium. Marble may also contain quartz, forsterite, talc and garnet.
From white to beige, brown to black and red and greens in between, marble comes in a wide spectrum of colours sprinkled with diverse streak patterns, grains and width. The marble types are:
- Calacatta - startling white, with thick veins
- Crema Marfil - creme leaning to beige with more variety than creme beige
- Crema Beige - as the name implies, creme leaning to beige in colour
- Carrara - also startling white, with fine veins
- Dark Emperador - brown streaked with beige veins
Marble’s most prominent claim to fame is its use as a headstone or capstone at burial sites. However, besides this marble also makes spectacular looking table tops, counter tops, workstation tops and wall and floor tiles.
The reason for its popularity as a countertop is its ability to stay cool even on the hottest of days. As marble carries a lot of mass, it would require a lot of heat to get it to warm. This makes it a natural choice for these kinds of surfaces.
Although not as durable as ceramic and porcelain tiles, if well taken care of, marble tiles will last a good number of years. To keep marble clean, you should use a special cleaner. For maintenance, the best option for marble is to seal it using a clear varnish, which can then be regularly wiped down.
